Europe’s Most Stunning Natural Wonders

In addition to the rich blend of history and culture that makes European getaways so appealing, the continent is home to breathtaking natural wonders that offer a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Europe boasts the largest number of properties recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including both cultural and natural landmarks.

Every year, these World Heritage Sites attract over 100 million visitors, which often means navigating through crowds to fully appreciate their stunning views. With approximately 231 natural World Heritage Sites across Europe, where can you find the most serene and beautiful hidden gems that allow for a moment of peace to truly soak in the beauty?

We analysed reviews of all natural and cultural World Heritage Sites in Europe to uncover which locations are considered the most ‘beautiful’ based on positive sentiment. We then used Google Search data to track the average monthly searches for each location to measure its popularity among potential visitors. This allowed us to identify the natural sites with the most positive reviews but the lowest search volumes—deeming them hidden gems.

Methodology

To identify Europe’s top natural sites, we started with a list of all UNESCO World Heritage sites in the region. We then analysed a sample of 100 of the most recent Google Maps reviews for each nature reserve. Using Google Keyword Planner, we gathered keyword search data to assess public interest in each location.

Within reviews, we counted superlative keywords like "stunning," "beautiful," and "marvellous" to gauge scenic appeal. We also ran sentiment analysis with the TextBlob machine learning tool, which rates review positivity on a scale from -1 to 1 (with scores closer to 1 being highly positive). For readability, these scores were converted to a 0-100 scale.
