Curious about when humpback whales migrate to the Caribbean? Wondering which islands offer the best whale-watching spots? Discover our top tips for an unforgettable whale-watching experience.
Scientists have long debated the exact reasons behind humpback whales’ incredible migration, but here are some of the most popular theories:
Humpback whales embark on their annual migration to the warm waters of the Caribbean during their breeding season, which spans from December to April. It’s during this period that you’ll typically have a chance to see them in the Caribbean.
During their seasonal migration, they travel from the cold, high-latitude waters where they feed. In these icy regions, humpback whales consume krill and small fish, accumulating significant fat reserves. They then journey to the tropical, low-latitude waters, ideal for breeding, calving and nursing their young.
Humpback whales have been recorded to migrate as far as 5,000 miles (8,046 kilometres) in one direction between their breeding and feeding grounds. While they don’t travel particularly fast (some can be as slow as three to five miles per hour), they’re on the move at all hours of the day, covering 100’s of miles in that time.
The humpback whales that migrate to the Caribbean typically come from the North Atlantic.
Though it may be the smallest of the three US Virgin Islands, St. John is a hidden gem for humpback whale watching. As you cruise through the crystal-clear waters, keep your eyes peeled for the majestic humpbacks as they slap their tails and fins on the water.
The prime time for these awe-inspiring sightings is February, but it’s possible to get a glimpse from January to March.

Saint Lucia is renowned for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests and the iconic Piton mountains, and is a prime location for whale watching. And it’s not just humpbacks; the tranquil waters around Saint Lucia are home to as many as 25 different species of whales and dolphins, including sperm and pilot whales, as well as spotted and spinner dolphins.
